Descripción del Proyecto.

La estación se encuentra en el balneario de Tulum, en el Caribe mexicano, a lo largo de la Riviera Maya. El objetivo principal en el proceso de diseño fue llevar la agenda de sostenibilidad a un primer plano y encontrar en esa actuación optimizada una narrativa que hablara sobre las cualidades de la arquitectura maya prehispánica a través del uso de luz, sombras, patrones, materiales y vegetación. .

Uno de los elementos clave fue minimizar la huella de la estación, por lo que después de explorar diferentes configuraciones espaciales, una huella en forma de ojo, más ancha en el centro, donde convergen las funciones principales, parecía el uso más eficiente del espacio. Esto se mejoró al apilar el programa público de la estación sobre las plataformas que derivan en un esquema más compacto, conectado a través de niveles con circulación vertical y con un gran salón inundado de luz y ventilación natural.

Otra prioridad clave durante el proceso de diseño fue la experiencia del usuario, la facilidad de movilidad, la orientación y la presencia de luz natural. La configuración lineal de la estación y la simetría naturalmente ayudan, esto fue asistido por la geometría del techo que conduce intuitivamente a los usuarios hacia el centro de la estación.

Al diseñar el componente comercial, apuntamos a diseñar espacios que celebren constantemente la experiencia del transporte ferroviario. Esto se logró al enmarcar las vistas de los trenes entrantes y salientes, y al diseñar estos espacios comerciales en una conexión visual directa con los andenes.

El clima en la península de Yucatán es tropical con lluvias y alta humedad en el verano, para hacer frente a este clima extremo, prevemos un gran techo de celosía abierta, vidriada en ubicaciones estratégicas, habilitando espacios públicos semiabiertos que funcionan sin ventilación mecánica. La luz del sol que atraviesa el techo proyecta complejos patrones geométricos en las paredes y pisos de la estación, un juego de luces y sombras que recorre el espacio y evoca diferentes sensaciones en los usuarios.

Las aberturas en la rejilla responden a la exposición a la radiación durante todo el día, las aberturas más pequeñas en el cenit reducen las ganancias de calor en las horas más calurosas y las aberturas más grandes en los lados dejan entrar el aire y la luz cuando la temperatura desciende. Esta estrategia pasiva negocia la cantidad de exposición a la radiación y la cantidad de luz natural que ingresa a la estación.

La geometría aerodinámica del techo promueve la succión de la brisa del océano y la canaliza a través de la estación. Esto es clave para crear un ambiente confortable para los usuarios sin necesidad de ventilación mecánica.

La estructura del techo es una rejilla de acero revestida con paneles de hormigón reforzado con fibra de vidrio (GRC) en la parte superior y paneles de madera laminada en la parte inferior. Los motivos resultantes tanto en el lado exterior como en el interior recuerdan los patrones geométricos tradicionales mayas.

A lo largo del viaje de diseño, nuestro objetivo era infundir a la estación algunas de las características más conocidas de la arquitectura maya; la simetría, la monumentalidad, la alineación geométrica y el uso de piedra caliza son todas delicias constantes en la arquitectura maya. Como tal, hemos intentado honrar esta herencia rescatando esa misma calidad espacial, simplemente reinterpretándola de una manera contemporánea.
